Facebook Timeline For Brands And Business Pages are here to stay!
Through this post you will gain an understanding of the changes that are being made and how you can put the newest Facebook marketing features to use in your business. The timeline is Facebook’s new way of presenting the data that users and business users provide. It is a chronological stream that runs back through a business pages entire Facebook experience and with a little customization can go even further than that.
In essence your timeline represents the story of your business (milestones) whilst being paired with information, pictures, and videos of value to people interested in your business or area of expertise (status updates and uploads).
This is part of Facebook Timeline for Brands and Business Pages adds some great benefits for companies in terms of branding.
FACEBOOK TIMELINE COVER SHOTS
Without a doubt Cover Shots are one of the most noticeable changes to Facebook pages for business with the introduction of Timeline. Where you would previously only have the name of your page printed in text you can now create an image to represent your brand and welcome users to your business fan page.
The Facebook Cover is 851 x 315 pixels. The logo dimensions are now fixed to 180 x 180 pixels (32 x 32 thumbnail). You can still position your thumbnail or scale to fit as needed.
From a marketing perspective many would assume that this is a great space to add call to actions for your business encouraging likes/subscriptions and even promoting products but Facebook has explicitly banned this. In fact there are several limitations that you must be aware of when creating your custom cover image. The main ones currently noted are:
- No reference to Facebook specific features such
- No product price or purchase information
- No contact information
- No calls to action
LAYOUT AND NAVIGATION
Facebook navigation has returned to the top using a horizontal layout with up to 12 spaces for additional tabs via the drop down menu (3 rows of 4 tabs). The About and Photos tabs are permanently set, with Photos being the static first tab in your list. Other tabs can be added and arranged in any order by swapping positions with another tab.
While you can still incorporate a custom page via your tabs, you will no longer have the option for a custom landing page. The default landing page is now the timeline.
The profile picture you use for your Timeline pages has not escaped changes either. Whereas rectangular images were previously your best option you must now use a square image no smaller than 180 pixels x 180 pixels.
This image will be shown at the top of your page slightly overlapping your cover shot and will also be used for the thumbnail when interacting with Facebook as your page. As this will be your main visual identifier around the site you will want to make sure you either choose your Brand logo or a significant Brand icon so that you can be easily recognized at a glance.
MANAGING APPLICATIONS TAB DISPLAY
All app spaces can be re-arranged apart from the very first slot, which will always hold your pages photos. The image to represent your photos will always display your last uploaded image and is likely to change over time as you publish more content.
For everything else you can simply re-arrange or edit the app settings by clicking on the pencil that appears in the top right of the image whilst logged in as your page. If you are planning on adding custom images for these tabs you will need to create your app images at 111 pixels wide by 74 pixels tall.
The images you use to represent your app can also be used to add subtle directional hints towards the like button. This is a great area to place explicit marketing messages for your business as long as they relate to what the application contains, whether that be a free
report, links to your blog, a simple optin or even a contest. The next section of this report will expand on some of the apps you can add to your facebook timeline for brands and business page and why it may benefit your business.
